Revolutionary Socialism Conference Draws 300 Participants

The virtual conference “Revolutionary Socialism Conference: Towards a Revolutionary Party” was a step forward for the U.S. and international Left. About 300 people representing more than a half dozen U.S. socialist groups vigorously discussed and debated how to build a new revolutionary organization in the U.S.

The conference was sponsored by Socialist Horizon, Firebrand Communists, and the International Socialist League (ISL). Those organizations are actively promoting the regroupment of revolutionaries in the U.S. with a goal of creating a stronger revolutionary socialist organization.

Key sessions at the conference included an opening plenary titled “Building Workers’ Power and Revolutionary Socialism from Below” and “Building Revolutionary Organization Today.” Both sessions were attended by upwards of 100 people. The sessions underscored the need for a revolutionary organization which puts working-class power at the center and avoids the mistakes of reformism and Stalinism.

The conference also featured discussions about the struggle against US imperialism and Zionism, and for building resistance to the genocide in Gaza. A Lebanese comrade spoke from the ground in the Middle East about the Zionist destruction of Gaza. An ISL comrade on the Samud Flotilla sent virtual greetings. Other crucial sessions discussed the fight for bodily autonomy, reproductive justice and trans liberation, and the centrality of the need for socialists to organize for the abolition of ICE and the police.

The conference was truly international in scale and scope. Comrades from the Middle East, Italy, Ireland, Canada, Venezuela, and Argentina attended and contributed to discussions.

In the conference’s closing plenary titled “International Perspectives on Revolutionary Socialism” comrades from Venezuela, Argentina, and the South Asia Solidarity Network underscored the need for a revolutionary party in the U.S. to actively oppose imperialism.

Finally, the conference featured a vigorous discussion and debate about how to understand and oppose the far right and fascism. Where there was constructive difference expressed about whether Trump represents fascism or not, consensus was reached that confronting and defeating fascism is a central task of a revolutionary party in the US—and internationally.

This Sunday at 2 p.m. EST/1 p.m. CST/11 a.m. PST Socialist Horizon will host a national meet-up for those interested in discussing and building a new revolutionary socialist organization. “Building Socialist Horizon” is an open public meeting which will map the way forward for constructing an urgently needed socialist organization committed to defeating capitalism and imperialism and building workers’ power in the here and now.
