Como cada día, su mayor preocupación se centraba en encontrar un empleo permanente para no andar siempre a la deriva, y preguntándose cómo pagaría su renta. Esa angustia constante resultaba abrumadora y desgastante, y a veces, esa misma ansiedad le llevaba a la depresión, más Guadalupe sabía que no podía darse por vencida ni encerrarse en su casa a padecer su miseria, sus hijos necesitaban comida y un techo.

Guadalupe’s eyes had been on her cup of coffee for a while, but her mind wandered elsewhere, away from the rising aromatic steam. Like every day, her main concern was finding a permanent job, one where you don’t feel adrift and always wonder how you’re going to pay the rent. Recovering Radical Tejas: Mexican revolutionaries against settler-colonial capitalism

Racist populations have lived in Texas (or Tejas as it was originally named when part of Mexico) since the onset of Spanish colonization, only to escalate in intensity during Anglo colonization. This reality has indisputably remained the unfortunate reality for non-white Texans. The state continues to be controlled and dominated by a very reactionary minority of people whose actions reverberate across the country. I would argue that Texas is now the vanguard of the settler colonial project. This reality is not new but a continuity from the period studied in this project. The goal is to demonstrate that a radical alternative has been imagined, debated, and that many people have been moved to action for this better world for over a hundred years regardless of the state’s hostility.

In the beginning of March, I traveled to my birthplace of Dallas, Tejas. I made the difficult decision to travel and visit family after two years. I have always possessed conflicting feelings about what returning “home” means to me. In a state that historically was part of México and tries to erase this fact. I am reminded of the quote, “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us.” Yet, the racist politicians in power fight to keep those who have been forced to migrate due to U.S. imperialist invention from seeking refuge.
