Workers Win Independent Union Victory in Tijuana Maquiladora Luxshare

In early March 2400 workers at the Chinese owned Luxshare plant in Tijuana’s maquiladora factory district won the first independent union there since 1998. Mexico’s maquiladoras have long been dominated by fake company unions, products of contracts signed without the knowledge of the workers, in order to pre-empt actual independent unions. They joined the National Independent Union of Women and Men Workers Auto Workers (SINTTIA), an independent union that scored its first victory in 2022 at the GM factory in Silao.

The Path to Socialism Requires Border Abolition

Although the Biden administration has attempted to differentiate its immigration policies from those of Donald Trump, the end result has been the same: deportations, abuse and negligence of children jailed in detention centers and refugees turned away at the border. What’s more, Biden’s refusal to allow in the refugees at the border has contributed to horrific human rights abuses. As Reuters reported, nearly 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted since Joe Biden took office on January 20.

From Palestine to Mexico, border walls have got to go!

“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” is more than a slogan, it’s the call of a liberation movement. The Palestinian struggle for liberation is international and the fight for socialism begins when we unite to fight imperialism, colonialism and capitalism. The anthology Palestine: A Socialist Introduction published by Haymarket Books, gives us an overview of the possibilities of a better world, starting with Palestinian liberation. Editors Sumaya Awad and brian bean (brian bean is written in lowercase) offer us a succinct historical background of Palestinian liberation and an internationalist framework of socialism from below through which we can view this struggle.

¡Liberen a Susana Prieto Terrazas AHORA!

Free Susana Prieto Terrazas NOW!

On Monday, June 8th, the lawyer and labor leader Susana Prieto Terrazas was detained and arrested in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico by the Tamaulipas State Police. The city of Matamoros is located along the Texas-Mexico border directly across from Brownsville, Texas. She is being falsely accused of “attacks against public servants, riots and threat and coercion of individuals” by the Attorney General of the State of Tamaulipas. She is really being targeted for organizing maquiladora workers and challenging the corrupt and venal “charro” unions that work with state and federal officials to repress the new worker’s movement in Mexico.

The continental repression of Central Americans: interview with Víctor Interiano

I feel that within the imagination of most people who are neither Salvadoran, of Salvadoran descent, or Central American, El Salvador as a nation, people, and culture is a blank book with only four bookmarks for reference: the civil war, present-day mass migration, MS-13, and pupusas.

One of the greatest misconceptions and purposeful misrepresentations that has been constructed around El Salvador (and in general, Guatemala and Honduras) is a perpetual and contradictory dichotomy of simultaneous victimhood and criminality.

In the United States we are either pitiable victims of war, political repression, or poverty as long as we remain within our lands. But the moment we migrate, we become MS-13 terrorists and invaders that merit no asylum.

What is known about Salvadoran history and culture, even among progressive or leftist circles in the U.S., is largely informed from solidarity work around the 1980s civil war and interactions (between mostly white college students) and representatives of various liberation fronts.

Today, at times, it feels like many of our friends and allies still don’t know us.

This characteristic of being unknowable is not of our choosing or making. It is an unfortunate side-effect of the willful ignorance that comes with being absorbed into and propagating the hegemonic white supremacist culture of the United States.

Which is unfortunate, because to know us is to understand that Salvadorans are born fighters. Resistance is in our blood, from the anticolonial rebellion led by Anastasio Aquino in the 19th century, to the 1932 Indigenous Uprising, to the 1944 National Strike that brought down a dictatorship; we are a people in continuous mobilization for justice.
